Ho do you change the struts on a 1990 Toyota Corolla?

Are the any special tools or parts needed other than the new strut assembly?

above answerer correct. can be dangerous job dealing w/ pressurized struts and the springs also compressed. if you are replacing w/strut spring assys - not too bad. there are 2 bolts at bottom in knuckle and 3 nuts on top in eng compt that hold upper bearing in place. you have to lift car and support. remove wheels. support under brake disc w/ blocks so susp doesn't drop to far no tension just under disc. remove any abs wires or brake hose clips in way. remove 2 lower bolts from steering knuckle. and rest brake disc on blocks. then remove the three upper nuts. as you remove these nuts the strut may try to %26quot;fall out%26quot; so catch it. other wise now slide a couple blocks out and pull out the strut assy. now you NEED a SPRING COMPRESSOR TOOL to compress the spring. this is where you should just take it to a suspension shop and have them put the springs on your new struts. then you install the assys back in your veh.

BTW Thomas E here. make sure to mark or tag springs left and right. they are usually DIFFERENT spring rates slightly to tune the suspension for weight distribution. if you switch them the car may %26quot;wallow%26quot; or %26quot;wobble%26quot; after hitting bumps. lt/rt side operating at a different natual frequency.
