Struts on a 2006 toyota corolla?

We were recently at our dealer for a regular check-up. The car has 115,000 km on it and we were told that the left rear strut is leaking. We have felt no bumping or anything else unusual in the way the car drives. We barely drive it, especially in the summer. I've even heard of cars going way longer and never having to change the struts. Questions:

1 - how can we tell ourselves if and how much the strut is leaking? Wouldn't there be a spot on the driveway?

2 - can we replace it ourselves?
Struts on a 2006 toyota corolla?
1 - You raise the car and remove the wheel, and look at the strut. If it's wet (as though oil has been leaking from it) you have a leak (don't do this after driving through puddles, of course :) ).

2 - Yes, but you don't want to. It's dangerous and a huge PITA. Take it to an independent mechanic and see about getting a 'quick strut'. It's a complete strut assembly with a new mount, new bearing, new boot, new bumpstop, and new spring. It will cost about $120 more than a plain strut (figure on $200 for a quick strut assembly) but you get a lot more new parts, and save some money in labor since they're much easier to install.Figure $225 for a plain strut, or about $270-300 for the quick strut assembly.

Of course labor rates vary by region, so this might be low or high by a bit.

And a bad strut won't affect safety unless it's noticeably bad, and won't wear other parts, so let this one go until you have a problem you can notice.

Need Help with a 01 impala?

hey whats up... awhile back i hit a curb pretty hard to avoid an accident... well people are telling me to change the strut that should help alot of the problems(my abs light comes on im figuring its the strut ((could that be it?))) well im not 100% if the strut is the problem but can someone with more experience with this help me out?
Need Help with a 01 impala?
Have the car scanned with decent diagnostic system. Any ABS trouble should appear immediately on screen. This will aid in finding the exact fault. The impact may have damaged the ABS sensor and/or related parts, which may need to be replaced.
Need Help with a 01 impala?
If anything it is probably your ABS sensor on that wheel.

Do twenty inch rims fit on a 1995 toyota avalon or do i have to change the struts?

Twenty inch tires and rims would probably cost you more than your car is worth, plus you would also have the problem of all the local %26quot;low lifes%26quot; trying to steal them all the time.

I mean you no disrespect, but I know you guys that buy those things think it makes you look soooooo cool, but really everyone else on the road is laughing at you.

Changing the shocks and struts on a mustang?

i own a 1996 mustang gt. and i installed a custom lowering kit lowered the front 2.5 inch rear 2 inch and the stock shocks pretty much stay fully compressed due the 2.5 inch drop and they pretty much have no use saying that they cant decompress and compress is there any aftermarket shocks that u cna buy that are shorter that stock or am i stuck with a pair of dead shocks and struts

You should have gotten shorter shocks when you lowered it.

The same place you got the kit to lower it.

Go with something pneumatic, then you have a vast range of highs or lows.

How important is strut replacement for my car? ?

Recently I have noticed a click click noise from the front of my car. The other day I took it for an oil change and the guy told me to have the passenger side shocks checked, something about replacing the struts..... I called a place and was told they charge like 150 each, 250 for labor and another 80 for wheel alignment. What happens if I don't do it right away? Are they very important and need immediate attention? Because my car makes the noise only when I drive it for more then an hour. Any suggestion?
How important is strut replacement for my car? ?
The clicking noise is more likely a CV joint.

As for struts, the others seem to be right. They are very important, so drive conservatively till you get them done.

The price you were quoted seems high to me, so shop around before you commit to have them done.

I have seen struts done in two hours (all four), and I can find great shocks for 150 dollars a pair. Struts are one thing that I do not want original equipment for. I prefer Gabriel's or Monroe's. But a lot of store brands (NAPA and the like) are of the same quality as these.

Yes, get the shocks done and do not be surprised if you are told you need a CV axle when you do. Bargain with them before you say OK on this as a lot of the labor to replace the CV has been done at this point.
How important is strut replacement for my car? ?
Quality shocks %26amp; struts ensure safe, comfortable driving by helping tires keep their grip. Most people believe that shocks and struts are only necessary for improving a vehicle鈥檚 riding comfort. In fact, they do much more than that; their job is to help keep your tires firmly on the road.

Friction is your friend It鈥檚 important to understand that a vehicle鈥檚 ability to steer, brake and accelerate depends first and foremost on the adhesion, or friction, between the tires and the road. This adhesion is also referred to as the road holding capability of the vehicle, which is directly influenced by shock absorber or strut performance
thats very important. strut is basically the car that supports the car from falling flat onto the grownd. Think about it as the %26quot;legs%26quot; of the car. better get it fixedor you will literally lose a wheel on the highway.... and i am not kidding.

  • Firebird Trans Am GT strut shock help?

I think I need new struts or shocks, I think their are all struts. Are these possible to change by myself? I've done a number of procedures on my own but I'm not sure if this one is possible.

What does it take? My car has 75,000 miles. It makes creaks and noises. I'm pretty sure it is time to change them.
Firebird Trans Am GT strut shock help?
It is very possible. You will probably need access to a spring compressor. You can do a loan a tool autozone or pep boys, or you can just bring the strut assy. to them and they can switch them out for like $10 a piece. A Haynes manual will tell you all you need.

Replacing sway links may also help, it did get rid of some of the noises on my ride.
Firebird Trans Am GT strut shock help?
Rears are probably not struts but whats called, spring over shocks. same idea. Either way yes, you will need a spring compressor. Thats the hardest most dangerous part of the procedure so get or rent a good one. Replace the shock/strut mounts also while your at it. They may not be bad yet but why do the job again in another 25k or so.

    Whats wrong with my car?
If the strut was replaced and then you noticed the noise the spring could be slipping in the strut due to a defective bearing, other than that all i can think of is ball joints on tie rod ends and lower control arm, or an insulator/bushing.

    2001 Chevy Malibu Struts?

I need to get my struts changed. How crucial are struts for a vehicle? I don't know much about them. If i don't fix them, what are the consequences for the car, how can it affect my driving? Right now the car drives fine. Thanks
    2001 Chevy Malibu Struts?
if struts are bad you will have poor control of vehicle, car will be hard to control during turns bounce when u hit bumps, can also damage tires by rubbing against wheel well
    2001 Chevy Malibu Struts?
Front struts are front shocks. They need to be replaced when they become damaged (they are part of your front sespension)or worn out like whan a shock wears out. If you notice shock oil (turn the wheel all the way one way and use a flashlite to look at the shiney piston where it enters the strut housing) at the housing, or when the seals in side wearout. Try bouncing all four corners of the car and see how many bounces you have after you stop. (no more than three is ok)
Often you will be told you need struts when you really do not. I happens when the dust boots start cracking. I watched several times as a mechanic replaced struts because the dust boots were cracked only to not install new dust boots. Get more than one opinion.

How to change front struts on a 2003 ford focus?

what you have to do is take the top 3 bolts off and you then have to take the bolts that hold the strut assembly to the steering knuckle. Then you have to use a spring compressor usually mounted on a wall. Or you can get one that you can put on before you jack up the car but then you just take the nut off the top of the strut assembly and remove all the pieces such as the spring and then rebuild the assembly with your new strut

  • I have a '01 Subaru Forrester - about 1 mo. ago I had the struts changed......?

I also had the right front half shaft replaced. So I have noticed the last few days that left turns make a sound like a clunk somewhere around the wheel where the half shaft was replaced. Is the sound related? How do I figure it out?
I have a '01 Subaru Forrester - about 1 mo. ago I had the struts changed......?
This will happen if the hub nut is not tightened to the appropriate torque value (on the wheel end of the half shaft). Could also be something with the strut that is not installed or tightened properly as well. I would take it back to the shop that did the work and have them check it out. They should not charge you to double check it, and deserve a shot at fixing anything they might have missed. If you don't trust what they come up with I would then take it somewhere else for a 2nd or 3rd opinion. Other parts that clunk when bad include sway bar end links and ball joints, you have one of each on both sides. During left turns only the outboard (right) wheel has power, If I had to gamble my bet would be on the axle/half shaft hub nut being loose.

How to properly strut wo/over doing it?

As a crossdresser I want to move in a feminine manner, but dont want to over do it. Whats a good way to practice or techniques....

If i am wearing a mini skirt with 3 inch pumps vs, a pair of pants does that change how you walk?
How to properly strut wo/over doing it?
first off, dont do what many crossdressers do and act like theyre on a runway 24/7. women walk a little bit more fluidly than men, with less tension in their limbs, so just kind of shake it out and let everything go, then walk with one foot in front of the other, which gives you more of a sway

What is wrong with my left rear strut?

I have a 1996 Lexus ES. I have changed the rear truts but the left side tire is always touching the body whenever I hit the bumbs. The original rims were 15%26quot; but I have 16%26quot; rim on. Please help me solve this mystery.
What is wrong with my left rear strut?
larger rims are ok since you probable had a smaller profile tire to compensate, but the offset, the distance from the bolts to the outside edge of rim is too much or tires are too wide for the service your using it on.
What is wrong with my left rear strut?
well hopefully when you put the larger wheels on it, you put lower profile tires on it as well...
first of all did you have a 4 wheel alignment done when you did this if not i would try that since changing the struts changes the alignment
If I recall correctly, those struts are pretty tight on that car and don't travel too far. Have you checked the bump stops? They wear out over ten years and need to be replaced at the same time you do the struts. You also need to do alignments after struts.

Also, I'm assuming you checked the wheel-wells thoroughly, but sometimes debris gets in there and you will hear the tire rubbing... all you need to do is clean.

Scion tC Owners: What do you think of the Front Strut Bar?

I'm looking to purchase a new '08 and am toying with the idea of the from strut bar to improve the handling. The part is fairly cheap, but will it change anything noticeably?

As a disclaimer, I'm not really getting this car to %26quot;tune it up%26quot; and probably won't do anything aftermarket. Just curious about the strut bar that Scion Offers.
Scion tC Owners: What do you think of the Front Strut Bar?
The people telling you a front strut bar won't make a difference apparently know zilch about cars, or the behaviors of a vehicle during handling maneuvers. YES, the front strut bar will change the handling dynamics of your tC. You may only notice it under extreme situations such as auto-crossing, or very 'spirited' driving. However, under normal driving you might not experence a MAJOR difference. Its also not a modification normally done for aesthetic purposes, so I have no idea why people are saying its 'mostly for looks'.
Scion tC Owners: What do you think of the Front Strut Bar?
sorry i did not put a strut bar on my 2007, i only did the sub woofer the LED lights and the larger wing. mine is grey, flint mika i think its called, im up to 12 thou miles, it sucks watching the count rise
I have an 07 TC and honestly.... the strut bar will not make a single difference for you. You wont be able to tell a difference whether you have it or not. If you want to get something for your TC id go with the big spoiler and fog lights.
its a waste of money. a strut bar is mostly for looks. You wont feel any noticable change when driving. IF you really want a strut bar, i would go with an aftermarket one (WAY LESS CHEAPER). its easy to install plus it will look better.

    you can find it at:

The only time you will see a difference is if you put a sway bar front and back and in turns at high speeds. Other then that.. go with suspension overhaul.

What is causing the vibration on my front passenger tire during braking to a stop and at speeds around 70 Mph?

There was also a high pitched clicking sound at 70 mph that was resolved by changing the strut. Also, when I am driving at speeds lower than 10 mph I sometimes get a %26quot;KLONK%26quot; sound when turning. Due to the %26quot;klonk%26quot; sound I changed to CV joint, but the problem still remains. I took it to two mechanics, but the problem is still there... I'm to the point that I'm just letting it get worse so that it will be easier to diagnose. I'm just worried that something may fail when I have my 2 year old son with me :( I suspect that it is something to do with the suspension or steering...
What is causing the vibration on my front passenger tire during braking to a stop and at speeds around 70 Mph?
Check inner and outer tie rods and, upper and lower ball joints. The clunk makes me guess an upper ball joint is worn. It seems to me the mechanics should have been able to figure this out out. You might want to ask around for a reputable mechanic.
What is causing the vibration on my front passenger tire during braking to a stop and at speeds around 70 Mph?
The %26quot;Clonk%26quot; sound when turning is the critical clue here. The Ball joints are worn out. Not a job for the faint hearted or a dubious mechanic, as it leads to much cursing and tool throwing. The ball joints are located above and below the CV joint and are Pressed in and out with hydraulic tools(If done properly). The Mechanics who looked at this should have checked this first. There is a very simple test to figure this out. With your car on a level surface, Stand beside the front end and give it a hard shove to the side. You should hear the %26quot;Clonk%26quot; when you do this. Take the car to a decent front end shop, suspension shop, or to the stealership. Yes they will all rob you blind but piece of mind is a valuable thing. A certified mechanic with good liability coverage is well worth the overinflated price.
Check your wheel bearings. This could cause all that you have described.
Control arm bushings are a good place to start.

  • Why does my car shakes at 65mph and up?

I've got a 1994 Chevy Cavalier Z24 5 speed. Everything works good. No problems with the engine at all. I've changed everything below because before it'd shake around 40mph.

Both front struts. I didn't change the strut mounts though.

    Tie rods

    Ball joints

Sway bar links (just one side, other side was fine)

    Brake pads

And I got an alignment done after all of this. I was told that everything looked fine and nothing else needed changing. Still shakes at 65 and up.

It does not start shaking until I get to 65. Any lower speeds it'd drive just fine.

What's causing this to happen? I was told that it's 100% the wheel balance. Those are the only things I haven't gotten checked out yet.

Also what I need changed are the rear shocks. Both are shot. That'd explain the bouncing but not the shaking. Someone tell me what it is. I know the car is too old to drive smoothly but it shouldn't be shaking this bad at that speed.
Why does my car shakes at 65mph and up?
most of the time it will be a wheel balance
Why does my car shakes at 65mph and up?
You may simply have a slightly bent rim even if it is not noticeable to the naked eye. This can cause a vehicle to shake and shimmy at certain speeds even with proper alignment. My 1995 Mercedes did the same thing, even with a balance and shock replacement but after I replaced the rims it never happened again. Might be that or might not.
it can be a wheel inbalance...i have the same on my explo' and we decided to switche the wheels since they were not made for road...but for dirt.. as i said...try looking at the wheels from the front and you'll be able to see them not straight.....or as wat happend to me...the tires are worn or not made for that kind of driving... it can also mean your rims can be bent....try replacing them.
you could have a busted belt in 1 of the tires or the tires are out of balance.have the tire shop spin balance the tires. that should let you know if a belt is broke. those bubble machines don,t tell anything.
If you feel the shaking all over, then most likely you're in need of a Rotate and Balance. Shaking at 65 mph is a symptom of needing a Rotate and Balance
if your wheel shaking and you can feel the stearing shaking most of all is your wheel balance..but if you had balanced your wheel but still shaking maybe its the tire(minimum case)

When i turn the wheel to the left or right i get a "thunk" sound. what is that?

i just changed the struts on my car.
When i turn the wheel to the left or right i get a %26quot;thunk%26quot; sound. what is that?
Also check the stabilizer links that attach the to the stabilizer bar. These are a common item to break and cause funny clunks or snaps when turning. Hopefully thats it cause they are cheap
When i turn the wheel to the left or right i get a %26quot;thunk%26quot; sound. what is that?
is it a thunk or more of a whine and does vehicle have power steering if so check power steering fluid levels low levels make steering a little harder in lower gears and emit a loud whine or in somr cases a thunk / thump sound
It could be the ball joints or the tie rod ends. Get it checked out by a good mechanic. It may not be safe to drive.

What hair colors go well with darker skin?

I'm planning on coloring my hair and I'm not so sure on what hair colors are good for my skin and stuff. Maybe suggest a haircut?

    Skin: Darker than tan.

    Face shape: Round.

Hair: Black and thick. Layered, with straight bangs.

    Here are a few pictures:

Hair in the back[ [I'm the one in the middle]: http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a108/g鈥?/a>

    Any hair-changing suggestions?
What hair colors go well with darker skin?
okay... hair as dark as yours never looks right blonde... trust me ... if you are naturally dark and try to lift it blonde it will make it to that orange/red stage and then after that maybe get yellow... so you need to stick with browns maybe 2-3 shades lighter than your natural... the lightest Hi-lites I would get would be a honey or caramel color... your hair is beautiful, shiny and healthy.. remember once you start coloring you change the makeup of your hair and it never feels as good as it does when you started.... for a hair cut i think some choppy layers would flatter your face... good luck
What hair colors go well with darker skin?
You really should go to a salon and get your hair trimmed and treated(deep conditioning treatment %26amp; everything they do to revive hair ) before you colour it.
What I do is to compare myself with a celebrity with similar features and skin tone because they are always changing their hair color and style.
actually black is the best colour for dark skin, cuz it's enlighten your skin tone. But if you're bored and want something new, you can try beyonce's hair colour.

I havent see any of the picture so i dont know how long your bangs are.

you know, if you want to change your hair type you may need to know what you want to appear like. would you like to look more mature, or younger, or happier, or more serious.

but in general, trimmed-long sided bangs work best for thick hair and round face.

struts are struts the type of ride you want and the warranty should determine what kind of shock you buy not the name brand. if the struts are separate from the spring then they are shocks not struts. as long as the nuts are not froze up it will be a short job. but the shocks control travel so don't jack your car up and let the suspension hang jack. or when you take the shock off the suspension will drop. Jack it up so that the shocks are half way in there stroke put some jack stands under the frame and the remove the shocks .
I thought a car that old would have regular shocks in the back? Or did you just used the wrong term? Struts are McPherson struts. Shocks are just shock absorbers. Very different beasts.

From what I find on the net, Delta 88 have Coil Springs / Regular Shocks in the back, no struts. Struts are mainly for Front-wheel-drive cars, and your Olds ain't one of those.
I prefer KYB struts and shocks. Unlike Monroe the KYB units are actually built to original equipment specs so that once installed, the car rides and handles like Olds intended. Monroe struts and shocks are not valved to the specific applications they fit. I've had complaints from customers on some installations that they are excessively stiff and have even had to remove a few sets and replace them with something else.

if you have the right tools and a good manual for the car and follow the instructions then you can do the job just fine
It's pretty easy, just get a Haynes shop manual(there the best). You will also need a set of good spring compressors. But, if your handy and can follow instructions, It's definitely a DIY project.

One tip, unless your upgrading to super expensive struts. Gabriel struts are much better than Monroe. Go to www. gabriel.com. Hope this helps and good luck.
the easiest way is to remove the strut assemblies from the car/take them and new struts to your local tire store and have them change the springs over to your new struts-usually not very expensive and much safer than using spring compressor tools as they have wall mounted or freestanding spring compressors/you will need to have 4 wheel alignment done because removing and replacing struts will change your alignment settings

How do you know when your strut are bad?

i drive an 02 pontiac bonneville sle,,,i had the front struts and mounts changed 20k miles ago and currrently has 53k in total but the ride seems hard and uncomfortable
How do you know when your strut are bad?
A firm ride is an indication for good struts, worn struts will cause the car to bounce a lot. You had struts replaced at 33,000 miles? that is extremely early.....most time they dont even start getting recommended until around 60k, but replacing your struts will not make the ride less %26quot;hard%26quot; The main purpose of the struts is to keep the tires firmly planted on the Ground while going over bumps (which decreases distance it takes to stop the car and also the less up and down movement of the suspension means the less wear on your front end parts and tires), not necessarily to give the car a comfortable ride. Good luck
How do you know when your strut are bad?
If the tires are wearing in a wavy pattern, in other words, if there are hills and valleys as the tires spin, the struts are going. Means they aren't doing their job keeping the wheels from bouncing so much over the road surface when you go over surfaces that aren't super smooth.
How to know that your struts are not struting their stuff.

You bounce one corner of the car very hard up %26amp; down, let go and it should only bounce one and a half more times.

and no more.If it does not bounce easy they may be sticking or collapsed.

Check the air pressure in the front tires, may be to much.

  • How do you change the struts on a '95 dodge neon?

You guys are scaring me. Neither one of you knows what you are talking about. On a Neon, it's a matter of unbolting the top and bottom bolts holding the struts in and taking them out. it's relatively simple. There's no disconnecting calipers and all that other crap. But replacing struts on a car is dangerous because you need to compress a bigazz spring that's under a lot of pressure. You need a strut spring compressor and enough equipment to get the car off the ground at least one wheel at a time. Spring compressors are not cheap, either. If you get one of those cheap-azz compressors from Pep Boys you're liable to hurt yourself when the thing lets loose. Replacing struts on any car requires more tools than you have in your tool box. It will cost you about 700 bucks to have them replaced on your Neon, and the struts themselves are going to cost you over 500 bucks. You'll spend well over 200 bucks in tools and headaches even if you are successful. You'll also need to get some cars aligned after you replace the struts, but not all. There's a lot of things you can do to your car to save money. Brakes, oil changes, rotating your own tires, changing belts, that kind of thing. But don't mess with struts.
How do you change the struts on a '95 dodge neon?
You're going to need a pair of ramps to get the Neon up high enough to slide underneath to take out the old struts and to install the new ones! After that it's just 3-bolts for each side! Use the ramps safely and block the wheels!
How do you change the struts on a '95 dodge neon?
I think rense is messing with you. You cant have the wheels on ramps because you have to remove them. Before you put it in the air, remove the hubcaps and break free both axel nuts and remove them, unless you have air tools, Jack up both sides and put jackstands under it to hold it up. never work under a vehicle with a jack. remove the tires, calipers, caliper holder, take brake hoses off the strut body, remove the rotor. Remove the lower ball joint retaining nut. I fyou have a small piece of chain ( longer than 8%26quot;) loop it around the lower control arm and put a prybar or pipe through it and push down to remove the lower ball joint from the strut housing. pull the strut out towarrd you and push the axel out of the hub. Unbolt the strut from the towerUsually 3 bolts under the hood. Rent a spring compressor from most any auto parts store and remove the spring. be careful and use caution. replace the strut put it all back together. Ps you do not have to open the brake lines just pull of the retaining clip or unbolt the bracket from the strut body

Ride like im sitting on a cloud?

i have a chevy impala...and the ride is ok but it could be alot better, i was wondering if anyone can tell me how to achieve the ultimate comfort in my ride, by changing shocks, struts, springs?
Ride like im sitting on a cloud?
get an air bag suspension that is the smoothest ride because you are just riding on air........
Ride like im sitting on a cloud?
Put some soft pillows under your behind and then you will get a softer ride. If that don't work than install a swinging seat with a springs on it.

How do you change coil springs on cars with shocks, that don't have a strut in the middle of the spring?

Do you use the same spring compressor that you would use on cars with struts? Also, can you please explain the process? Thankss! :D
How do you change coil springs on cars with shocks, that don't have a strut in the middle of the spring?
    1. lift the vehicle off of the ground.

    2. Remove the wheels

    3. use a spring compressor to compress the springs, one at a time, removing them.

    4. use a spring compressor to compress the springs, one at a time, installing the new springs.

    5. re-install the wheels

    6. lower the vehicle to the ground
How do you change coil springs on cars with shocks, that don't have a strut in the middle of the spring?
This procedure can be very dangerous if proper knowledge and tools are not available.

I suggest that you obtain a reputable shop manual for the vehicle in question and carefully study the section dealing with this operation.

Indeed, the manual will warn you of the risks involved with replacing coil springs.

This information should then guide you in determining whether you want to undertake this task

I am not trying to scare you from doing this, merely informing you of the potential for severe injury.
YES,O.K LETS SEE IF I CAN EXPLAIN THIS EASY ENOUGH FOR YOU.FIRST JACK UP FRONT OF CAR AND PLACE JACK STANDS ON THE FRAME OF THE CAR LETTING THE FRONT SUPENSION HANGING FREE WITH THEN WITH PLACE COIL SPRING COMPRESSOR HOOKS ONTO THE COIL SPRINGS ON BOTH SIDES THEN TIGHTEN DON THE COIL SPRINGS MAKING THEM COLLAPSE THEN REMOVE REVERSE PROCESS BUT BACK IN.BE VERY SURE THAT YOU GET THE COIL SPRING COMPRESSOR HOOK GOOD ON SPRINGS. sorry of the captial didn.t realize i hit the tap

Whats the difference between the FE2 impala strut and the FE4 impala strut?

I have a 2001 impala ls with FE2 struts and a friend of mine has a 2004 impala ss with FE4 struts. His ride is smoother that mine. Can I buy FE4 struts and put them on or will I need to change my entire suspension?
Whats the difference between the FE2 impala strut and the FE4 impala strut?
His ride also has different springs and front swaybar. The difference is more dampining ability. (Takes bumps better, more absorbtion) but you will also need to swap the springs and swaybar. Also his car has 17%26quot; wheels and tires. So why dont you just upgrade to a better strut form a different maufacturer rather than replace all that. It would be cheaper.
Whats the difference between the FE2 impala strut and the FE4 impala strut?
whell to me its the suspension thats the difference and i do think u can bye the fe4 strut and put them on your fe2

How big a job is it to change a lower arm and a strut top on the nearside on a ford ka?

i need to change a lower arm and a strut top on the nearside on my ford ka as they are worn does anyone know if it is a big job to do and if i take it to a mechanic roughly how much money should i be looking at paying
How big a job is it to change a lower arm and a strut top on the nearside on a ford ka?
The lower arm is a wishbone which is bolted onto the car and is not a big job but male torx bit sockets are needed for the ball joint bolt. The strut top mounting does require special tools as the road spring needs to be clamped and compressed. In total about 1 and 1/2 hours to do both jobs.Hope this helps

The past couple weeks at my job was cool and chill because my staffs didn't really expect much out of me but now it has been a month and a half and I still don't know crap. Please is there a website that I can go to learn about cars. Selling and explaining the benefits of tires, batteries, oil change, shock struts, brakes, etc. Please I am desperate.

If someone can link me to a website that explains this in detail then I will definitely pick your answer as the best answer, guranteed.

http://www.theautochannel.com/howstuffwo鈥?/a> is a website that explains so many different car parts. If you're really interested in cars, then it would be very easy to find information on them by going online and just typing in the topic on yahoo. Howstuffworks.com is pretty helpful to find info on just about anything.

Do I need an alignment after replacing the front struts on my car?

I am changing out the front struts on my 2002 honda civic this weekend because the front right one is leaking. Someone told me a front end wheel alignment must be done afterwards or else the tires will wear fast. Is this true?
Do I need an alignment after replacing the front struts on my car?
usually, on modern strut cars, ANY work on the front suspenssion calls for an alignment. It's cheep insurence and does help prolong tire life!
Do I need an alignment after replacing the front struts on my car?
Yes, you will need to have the camber set which is the angle of the top and bottom of the wheel. Which will probably throw of your toe which is the front and back of your tire set in or out. and struts also effect caster which is the angle that the strut is set into the strut tower which helps the car wheels return to a straight driving after a turn.
Yes. After replacing the front struts an alignment needs to be done. If you have enough mileage on your car to require new struts then its time for an alignment anyway but after changing the struts then your alignment will be affected so yes have it should be done.

How do you change the gas struts for the rear hatch of a 1997 z28. What tools are required?

A thin bladed small scewdriver or pocket knife blade. First get something like a long 2X4 or stout broom stick or someone strong enough to hold hatch up while you take struts off one at a time. There is a half round clip at the top and bottom of each end of the strut. Get your little screwdriver blade or knife blade in where you can gently pry out on the clip, you do not have to remove them completely as you are holding clip out, give a sharp jerk near the end where the clip is, it should come undone, repeat the same on other end. To re-install just make sure the clip is centered in open end of new strut, place over the ball and whack with small mallet or butt of your hand. Your new strut may come with new clips on them, if so, get old clips off of old struts and save them. You cannot get them unless you buy new struts. Hope this works for you.Good Luck!

I had my struts changed two weeks ago now i hear a rattling noise everytime i hit a bump in the road i was?

told it could be my swaybars
I had my struts changed two weeks ago now i hear a rattling noise everytime i hit a bump in the road i was?
well if they did their job right they would have check the whole front end out for problems which sounds like they didnt noise could be the mounts where struts ride on could be sway bar could be a few things id be back at that place asking questions
I had my struts changed two weeks ago now i hear a rattling noise everytime i hit a bump in the road i was?
    Look at the bushings first.
may be the clips on the brake pads, could have fallen out when they removed the tires to put on the struts.
sway bar bushings wear out and is a very common cause of %26quot;thunking%26quot; on vehicles look at the bushings and you can see if they are wore and deteriorated thats not a huge safety concern just irritating another possible cause could be tie rod ends or ball joints both of those are serious safety concerns as if you lose a tie rod u lose your ability to steer and if ball joint pops out your wheel will pass you up going down the road move wheel back and forth and watch/feel for looseness at the ends to check ball joints jack vehicle up and grab tire on the top and bottom and feel for movement best bet is to go to a tire shop most will give a free inspection and that is what i would recommend if your not mechanically inclined as front end issues can be dangerous
Year make and model helps. Your sway bar links are bad though. I sell them with the struts in most cases.

Chevy Equinox bad struts makes a creaking noise?

On a 2005 Equinox I have a creaking noise whenever I wiggle the wheel turn or go over a bump. I am thinking it is the passenger strut? Should I change both fronts? Should I get new or get some at the junkyard? Also could this cause my car to vibrate the wheel whenever I hit the brakes?
Chevy Equinox bad struts makes a creaking noise?
Well yes it could be just your upper strut mounts and bearings are faulty. One test some do is try pushing down on the front end and see how many times it bounces the basic rule is it shouldn't bounce more then twice that would tell us that the shock part of the strut is no good, plus how it takes bumps but remember the proper tire pressures effect how the car handles pumps too.

Another thing you can do is look up at the wheel and tire see how much clearance its has between the wheel walls. If it's the right tire and air there should be lots of clearance.Basically if the say front end isnt sitting up high enough you not the right clearances then you could say the strut spring is faulty but sometimes a shock will be so bad it also casuses the same issues.

If you feel like a rubbing or hestitation in the steering wheel , then it could be the strut mounts for sure but yes change both sides not just one.You would see this same hestitation up inside above the spring when turning the wheel too that say upper mounts and bearing are going or gone.

When dealing with struts remember for the longest time you could only buy new struts that came without springs , but now a days some offer new complete strut assemblies. What is best to do is get more then one opinion on the strut or front end faults and shop around for struts or mounts etc , some rebuilt struts are much cheaper come with the springs and have full lifetime warrantys.

If you're going to be driving on rough turf or roads and planning on keeping that vehicle awhile more then try getting a upgrade in struts , example basic struts , med grade , heavy duty struts. If I got them for the right price and labour cheap enough if I was you I'd be sure my rear struts are solid and also upgrade then down the line etc , just remember it's best to have the proper tire air pressure , all 4 wheels balanced and then get a 4 wheel alignment after changing the struts or replacing mounts etc unless the mechanic is right on and no need but always get it checked for alignment anyways and any good shop wont do one if they find the struts and vehicle within proper alignment specs.

Just don't let some shop just change the mounts unless the bearings are include and never do one side bec the whole steering will have uneven pressures and wear out faster. Its like you dont change one headlight with changing the other bec it ends up unbalanced and causes the other headlight to fail almost asap.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way you can get the vehicle's front end up via jacks , stands , rear blocks , emg brake and whobble the tire from 12 to 6 oclock see if you look up above the spring if excess play exists , plus you could find out if the tie rods, ball joints are solid etc by doing this at 3 and 9 oclock and repeating the 12 and 6 oclock test.

Try pulling on the outer tie rods see if theyve any play do that with the inner tie rods too bec you could have a combination of problems or the inner tie bushings might be worn out.A service manual could be quite helpful to you now and in the future bec they've trouble shooting charts and diagrams too.

How tough is a RWD conversion?

Problem with conversion on my car, limited underbody support for driveshaft, and rear assembly suspension support. No solid suspension for rear wheels. Just a few stabilization bars and the strut stuck up in the tower near the passengers head.

Looking to change that. Shorter strut, and alot of welding.

1994 Nissan Maxima is the car.

Anyone have any information on an estimate for suspension upgrade on rear wheels?

Also, would I be able to pick out a rear drive assembly from another Nissan vehicle with a similar wheel base and add it? Then change the interior bay under the hood to turn a F/R engine 90掳 and have a custom C/F driveshaft built?

alot tougher than that, but mechanically, can those major steps be done?

Price ranges? Gotta call my lender.
How tough is a RWD conversion?
if you want to put 10 to 20 thousand in a 94 to get a car worth 2000 go on...
How tough is a RWD conversion?
ok how does near impossible sound..

why even do it on a maxima ne way??

i mean the whole engine needs to be rotated to get the spinning to the back of the car. the driveshaft/ transmission would neeed to be moved.. god why am i even wasting my time.. stupid question save your money and buy a damn rwd drive car. i hate people who ask a stupid questionj like this about a 13 year old car thats not woth anything

i would say it would cost at least 8,000 $$

wow thats a huge down payment on a gto or 350z or s2000 or maybe a mustang

try one of those instead of wasting money on a car thats on its last leg already
Don't even start that nightmare. If you want a different car find one, don't try to build it out of a Maxima. Of course anything can be done but anybody at all with any custom or fabrication experience will agree with me, if you need a loan to experiment with this Frankenstein idea, don't do it. Just hit yourself in the nuts with a hammer, and flush what you have in your wallt down the toilet. You'll be better off.

I know that isn't what you wanted to hear but it really is in your best interest.
Okay...... before I give you advice on this....... I'm going to tell you to run the other way like your life depended on it!!!!!! I did a RWD conv. on a 1997 Chevy Cavalier..... In order to do it the fabrication prices are ungodly!!!! But if you've got the $ and the time to put into it, it can come out a really one of a kind car! As far as pulling a RWD assembly...... I think the corresponding year Frontier or Small wheel based P/U was built onto the same platform and should be interchangable....or you coud also go as far as to build your maxima onto a new frame........
LOL - %26quot;Hit yourself in the nuts with a hammer %26amp; flush your money down the toilet%26quot; Sounds really crude, but he is 100% correct. EVERY car modification such as this takes 10 times more time than you thought, and 10 times the cost. If you are taking a loan to do this? Forget about it.

    Then again, the old saying is %26quot;speed costs money - how fast do you want to go?%26quot;

Why is my car higher on the right than the left?

I'm not that fat, but even when I'm out of the car, the car sits higher on the left than the right. Will an alignment fix this or do I need new springs or something? I think the struts were changed not too long ago but I don't think the previous owner got an alignment.
Why is my car higher on the right than the left?
The right front needs to be adjusted higher and this will fix the leaning.

When new struts were installed they got the adjustment out on that side. Not knowing what type of vehicle you have I cant tell you how to adjust it.
Why is my car higher on the right than the left?
You need springs or air in your tires. The alignment will not affect ride height.

What suspension parts to change in a 1999 Camaro?

Hello, I bought a used Chevy Camaro V6 at 95k miles from a used dealer and it now has 112k miles on it. The car has always sat pretty low (probably the dumb owner before me had it lowered even more.......) but now it seems that it's not doing that well over bumps and such.

What do I need to change : shocks and struts and where are they located (rear/front)?
What suspension parts to change in a 1999 Camaro?
we recommend changing shocks/struts at anything over 75K miles. If the shocks have been worn for a long time, chances are the springs are shot, too. I believe the older Camaros had shocks all the way around.

Changing spark plugs and wires on a 2003 chevrolet s10. how to do it my self?

Changing spark plugs and wires on a 2003 chevrolet s10. how to do it my self?
ok i,ll try to guide you through this. first you need a 3/8 drive ratchet and a 5/8 plug socket and maybe extension. pull 1 plug wire off at a time so you don,t get the firing order mixed up. take the plug out, gage the new 1 and put it in and tighten it but just snug it. now take the plug wire off and measure it with 1 of the new wires and install the new wire of the same length. just keep doing the same way with the rest of the plugs and wires but only 1 at a time. s-10 you say? ha, ha. i changed a set of plugs in 1 of those awhile back and it,s a bear to get to some of them. you might get to some of them by using a swivel on the socket.

go to your local library to see if they have chiltons manuals or mitchel service manual, PS you didn't say 4CYL or 6CYL good luck.

  • SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT and mount issues?

the engine light i beleve is because of a bad o2 sensor, its goes on and off every five seconds at idle but when i apply the brake is doesnt come on, and will driving it comes on only a few times but not as bad as at idle, am i on the right page here?

    also

well i changed the strut mount and passenger front motor mount in my 94 oldsmobile cutlass supreme because it jumped real bad every time i put it in gear, the mounts where ate up real bad from previous owners, it helped some but when i am driving and go into reverse then to drive it goes clunk, but if im just siting still and move the gears its fine, almost like if the engine was reved a lil bit then into gear it will go clunk real bad and the engine jerks forward

is this fine or maybe another mount may be bad?

    thanks
SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT and mount issues?
1st off, without proper diagnostics you cannot get a proper repair...with that being said...

2nd, your service engine light is normally due to your engine in need of an oil change, depending on year, make, and model, or it could mean a variety of different codes...need more information than what you have here.

3rd, as far as the transmission issue...it sounds like a couple of different problems such as transmission mounts or differential problems.

My advise to you...take it to a trusted and certified technician that can do the proper diagnostics and give you a proper repair.

Good luck and hope this helps.
SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT and mount issues?
The service light should not come on and off in that fast of a time frame , when it detects an issue it would take a couple cycles (start and turn off car) , that is pretty odd . Other issue I would check the transmission mounts .
Just because the check engine light is on does not mean it is an O2 sensor. You must scan for the codes and DIAGNOSE the problem. How would you like it if you came to my shop and sold you and O2 sensor and then you came back with the light on and then I sold you a $300 Mass Air Flow sensor and so on until we got it right.

You must find out what is causing the problem.

On the other issue, check all of your engine and trans. mounts. Also, some cars have torque mounts on top that look like %26quot;Dog Bones%26quot;. Take a look at them.

I have a Plymouth Breeze 2000. My rear is making a lot of squeaking noise near the trunk area and i hear a?

bang when i go over a bump! So my friend changed the rear struts and there's still a squeak. The springs are fine. If you pushed the rear up %26amp; down it squeaks loudly. SO NOW HE THINKS IT 'S THE STRUT REAR BUSHINGS. Would the new rear bushings help with the squeaking and banging noise going on in the rear? thanks! please some advice.
I have a Plymouth Breeze 2000. My rear is making a lot of squeaking noise near the trunk area and i hear a?
Yeap, they sure would take care of that. Also, let him know to spray lube in the other bushing areas, like the control arms and such.
I have a Plymouth Breeze 2000. My rear is making a lot of squeaking noise near the trunk area and i hear a?
Any time you change a part u should always change what it is connected to,for instance spark plugs AND wires.Im sure the bushings need replaced as well theres not much bak there to replace.

Why Impact Wrench Not Recommended For Tightening Struts?

I was changing the front struts of my vehicle and came with the struts was a note that says using impact wrench to tighten the strut is not recommended. Anybody know why using impact wrench to tightening struts is not recommended? Thanks..
Why Impact Wrench Not Recommended For Tightening Struts?
Too much torque could run the studs and/or the threads.
Why Impact Wrench Not Recommended For Tightening Struts?
When you use an impact, you have no control over torque, and will probably overtighten or break the bolts.
it an break off your nutsif you get in a position trying to get more leverage.take them off or twist them too tight so you will always be uncomfortable about the results. when you hear a mechanic screamnig under acar it almost always is the impact wrench that got him.
A impact wrenchs foot pounds can be severely affected by the amount of air that is supplied to it. It can overtighten or undertighten. It is always best to use a torque wrench. Many times the parts house from which you bought the part will loan specialty wrenches such as torque wrenches.
because the center nut is self locking and if you try to put it on with an impact gun, the shaft will just spin and eventually heat up and ruin the seals in the strut. i used to be a mechanic and that was the warning that I got in one of the struts i bought. If you can get it tight and on the ground again youmay be able to sinch it tight with an impact but i wouldnt stay on it long. stop if the shaft spins. You can mark the shaft with permanent marker to see if it is spinning.

How do I change the rear struts in a 1998 Ford Contour? (I want to do it myself.)?

As I understand it all we have to do is rent a spring compressor, and unbolt everything and replace it. Am I missing something? Not feeling too confident about the job but it seems straight forward.
How do I change the rear struts in a 1998 Ford Contour? (I want to do it myself.)?
very straight forward job easy to do, get the spring compressor it will save you time and is less frustrating with it just be careful around the brake lines when removing the two bolts at the bottom
How do I change the rear struts in a 1998 Ford Contour? (I want to do it myself.)?
You don't really need a compressor, you may be able to prop the strut up and stand on it to get it compressed.

    Struts part 2?

Thank you everyone for the answer to my struts question! My next question is that if i get a wheel alignment for the front after the strut change, is there anything that needs to be done to thee rear? I'd hate to be driving sideways down the street!
    Struts part 2?
Absolutely no need to. Struts do not change ride height or move suspension geometry.

If you had changed to lowering springs or new exact replacements you should have it re-aligned.
    Struts part 2?
have them do a four wheel alignment
By changing the front struts the rear wheel alignment will not change however since you fixing up the car it would be a good idea to have a 4 wheel alignment done since you need to have the front alignment checked anyway after replacing struts on the front. Your car will drive straight and give you maximum life from your tires that way.

VERY BOUNCY SUSPENSION!. Do i need to change the springs or can i just change the struts? Its a volvo 940.?
    HI

your problem is not the springs but the shocks/struts.. that's what stops the car from bouncing. If you push down hard on any corner of the car and it bounces more than once they the shock/struts are bad.

    good luck

VERY BOUNCY SUSPENSION!. Do i need to change the springs or can i just change the struts? Its a volvo 940.?
im sure the springs are fine.just have the struts changed.that's usually what is done.sometimes though you can buy the whole unit, springs and struts already together.depending on the car though.

How do I change the struts on a 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix GT?

You are going to need a spring compressor, this can be very dangerous, so be careful, if you are not sure of your mechanic abilities I would suggest not trying it yourself. Another option are getting assembled struts from Monroe, which have the spring already on, and just bolt in.

    Link to Pic of the Monroe %26quot;Quick Strut%26quot;

How do I change the struts on a 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix GT?
Attach the spring compressor, unbolt them, compress the springs and remove. Installation is reverse.
How do I change the struts on a 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix GT?
Unbolt them, compress the spring, take top nut off and remove strut, install new strut, tighten nut, release tension on the spring compressor, install strut in car, and get a four wheel alignment done.
rent spring compressor - follow above steps. then go and get car re-aligned immediately.

I need to find coil spring compressor?

does anyone know where i can find a really cheap coil compressor? tomorrow i am going to be changing the struts on my car and i need a cheap compressor. Thanks!
I need to find coil spring compressor?
In many areas Auto Zone, Advance, and other auto parts stores will rent, or loan with deposit, special tools like the one you are looking for. Most locations should have a coil spring compressor. Cost is minimal, especially if you buy the parts from them. They can also insure you get the right part and tool for the job you're doing. Good luck with it.
I need to find coil spring compressor?
a coil spring compressor isnt something you need very often so i'd suggest just renting one at any of your local autoparts stores, checkers, autozone, pep boys, napa, heck, even a hardware store might have it.
Use 2 jacks: a floorjack or jackstands or blocks to hold up the frame/body of the car and another jack to jack up the suspension and slowly let down the control arm when you have disconnected the necessary equipment.

1990 Volvo 740GL - mechanic says we should do..?

Hey everyone, I bought a used 1990 740 GL wagon recently with about 160K miles. We're really on a tight budget right now so we can't really put a whole lot of work into the car, but we do want to keep the car for as long as possible wthout it breaking down. We took it to a mechanic to get a timing belt change and also have him look over the car. He told us that we don't really have to change the timing belt right now, because this car has the type of engine that won't get killed if it goes out while we're driving. He said technically we could just wait until it broke, have the car towed, and change it out then. So I guess we will wait on the timing belt. But, he did recommend that we do all of the following:

    Change struts - $900

    (Oil

    Air filter

    Petrol filter

    Spark plugs

    Cap

    Rotar) - $500

Are these really necessary to do right now and is the price reasonable?
1990 Volvo 740GL - mechanic says we should do..?
This is a fluid change and a tune up. You should check with other garages in your area for these services. This will help confirm the prices are not too high. Keeping the car tuned is important to the life of the vehicle.

  • How to remove back shock/struts on a 1999 mercury cougar?

I have replace my front but I don't know how to change the bad struts on the back of my 1999 mercury cougar. HELP anybody?
How to remove back shock/struts on a 1999 mercury cougar?
I can tell you that even experienced mechanics have trouble with the rear struts on the Cougar (Contour) platform. The guy I know actually fabricated his own lever tool which allows him to push down on the knuckle while pushing up on the spring seat. FoMoCo made this a difficult part to change by adding the %26quot;hook%26quot; stop on the body. Other than that it is a standard strut to change out.
How to remove back shock/struts on a 1999 mercury cougar?
i don,t know ! do they have the springs over the struts? if they do then you will need a pair of j-hooks to compress the springs after you get them off. on the bottom you should have 2 big bolts. here,s a tip to keep the back in alignment. before taking the big bolts out take some spray paint and spray around the bolts so you can put the new ones back in the same place and as for the top they should come up inside the trunk with about 3 nuts that has to come off.

Changing both of the rear struts of my 03 corolla, how much would be a reasonable cost including labor?

How easy is it to change shocks and struts?

    Car: Dodge Neon 2005 SXT

    1. What's the difference between shocks and struts?

    2. Is it as simple as taking the wheel off, removing the right number of nuts, taking the old part out, putting the new one in, and then the nuts back on?

    3. should I replace the spring too?

    4. should I aim for soft shocks or hard shocks?

    5. Where should I buy

    6. any other tips?

I just want a smoother ride through bumpy roads
How easy is it to change shocks and struts?
It is pretty easy AS LONG as you have the right tools to do it.

Whatever you do, don't undo the strut mount without compressing the springs, otherwise you could seriously injure yourself.

I would suggest a mechanic for this job. I am always the first person to suggest doing something yourself, but it's not worth the risk using the wrong tools. See if you can watch the guy change it, and learn for next time. =]
How easy is it to change shocks and struts?
It can be a fairly dangerous job if you dont know what your doing, you need to compress the springs.. and theres the chance that tey could release... lots of tensin on those babies. Unless however your going to replace the whole unit as 1 aka strut and spring in one unit where you wouldnt have to take the spring out then yeah its just take apart the front end and remove and replace.
    shocks rear not hard

    tip

    type how to check shocks

    how to check struts

and go to a shop have them all check or replace that easy
Struts are attached tothe steering knuckle so the car doesn't need an upper A arm they are bigger then a shock as they bear the load that used to be carried by the a arm.

Shocks don't support any load they a arms do that so they are smaller.

To get the strut off you have to remove the ball joint and axle nut and tie rod ends. These are rust bolts that will take some PB blaster to get loose. The Axle nut is going to be 25 to 33 mm and you don't have one of those. The strut and spring come out as one and you have to put the new stut on the spring. So you need a spring compresser.

Most auto parts stores %26quot;rent%26quot; spring compressers and axle nut sets. Rent becuase you pay for them and simply return for a full refund when your done.

Read how to do it first, go to the library and get the repair manual for your car.

Or go to Auto zone.com and register as a user. You add a car in the drop down box. then you can look at their online manuals.

The job is not technical - but you will learn a few new cuss words.

Changing the rear struts on my 1992 Chevy Lumina?

I need to replace the rear struts on my 1992 Lumina. Is this hard to do? I know my rear struts do not have the big spring. I looked and saw the large nut in the trunk where it attaches and it looks like three bolts down by the wheel. Do you have any tips or suggestions. I priced the struts at the parts store and they were like $54. I got a quote from a repair shop and they quoted $500. So you can clearly see why I would prefer to do this myself. I have changed things like water pumps, timing belts and brakes myself, so im not afraid to try anything. Any tips, help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Changing the rear struts on my 1992 Chevy Lumina?
It is not a hard job. Support the car on jack stands, and have a floor jack so that you can lift the axle assembly to line up the strut! Do one side at a time and you should have no problems. The nuts are hard to remove, you will be better off if you have an impact wrench, but it can be done with a hand tools!
Changing the rear struts on my 1992 Chevy Lumina?
The McPherson strut comes out as a complete unit and you have to have a special spring compressor tool to remove and replace the inner shock cartridge. It can be dangerous if not done with proper equipment and training. I guess you could bring the struts in to a local shop and have them compress the spring and replace the cartridges. Then you could do the rest of the job yourself assuming you have floor jacks and jack stands or a lift. See what Pep Boys charges for the job

I want to put lowering springs in what do I need to know.?

Just got a 93 Civic Si and I want lowering springs.

Do I need to change the struts or something? Shocks?

Or do I just swap the old coils with the new lowering coils..
I want to put lowering springs in what do I need to know.?
Pull the struts out the fronts have two bolts up top and a fork on the bottom that need to come off pull the whole strut out go to autozone and loan out a set if spring compressors compress the springs pull the top nut on the strut you need an allen wrench an a 14mm wrench with the spring still compressed pull the spring off the strut( if replacing with lowing spring you may need to compress new coil if replacing with coil overs no need to compress new spring)ok now to the rear two bolts up top in the trunk on the bottom DONT pull the strut bolt instead pull the whole controll arm its two bolts left and right and pull the strut straight down and repeat process from front you need 17mm wrench a 14mm wrench an allen wrench to complete job very easy to do but i always start with rear first incase i cant get the strut off the fronts always come off... GOOD LUCK
I want to put lowering springs in what do I need to know.?
with the car being so old if the struts havent been replaced in awhile the new springs will blow them out becasue they are engineered to handle the stock spring that came with them. if you want to do it right buy a complete coilover kit and istall them. good ones are tokicos tein eibach bilstein. and dont forget the camber kit. some states will fail you on inspection if you dont have a camber kit with a lowering kit
well if you just want the car to be lower then all you have to do is install the lowering springs. swap out the stock ones and replace them with the after market ones you get.

but if you actually want better handling your going to need a whole new suspension, i.e. coil overs or springs and shocks, strut tower and dampers.

It drives fine but it is bugging me. I just change the struts and springs to a set of monroe quick shocks. My steering wheel didn't do this before I changed them. How do I get it back to normal position?
2000 Cavalier steering wheel help please?
If you changed them your self then a alignment is in order. If you had someone do this at a shop then they should have done the alignment afterwords, and if the repair order say`s they did one they they should re-do it again for free. Good Luck.
2000 Cavalier steering wheel help please?
Get it realigned, some of them will change the camber on the alignment, when changing struts, the bottom strut bolts are sometimes to change the camber on it. Try jacking car up by suspension and loosen both lower bolts, then retighten them on both sides.
you need to get it aligned nobody can just eye spot a alignment you apparntly knocked something off and didnt put back exactly as is was save yourself the hedache just bring it in and get a alignment

Remove the bolts at the top of the strut tower (look under the hood). Then remove the 2 bolts that hold the strut to the knuckle.

    Remove.

At this point you should do it right/easy and install a %26quot;Quick Strut%26quot; which includes the strut, coil spring and top mount in one, easy to install, totally pre-assembled unit. Altima's of this vintage are prone to broken coil springs so I always recommend quick strut assemblies instead of just struts.

You can do it. Borrow/rent a strut compression tool from the parts store (Auto Zone or Checker, etc), get a Haynes or Chilton's manual for your car, and be careful. It's hard work, but will save you lots of money.

What is the problem with a 2002 CADILLAC sts that makes a clunking noise when driving and steering?

Is it ok to change just 1 strut on a cad. STS 2002
What is the problem with a 2002 CADILLAC sts that makes a clunking noise when driving and steering?
Your description doesn't have enough information. It could be a power steering problem or it could be something more serious. I wonder if you're having any fluid leaking problems? Also, what is your mileage, how is your gas usage, have you kept up regular oil changes, have you maybe hit a pothole that could have messed up your steering, drive shaft, etc.? Too many variables to diagnose.

You remember that cop who held his hand out as if he wanted you to stop and you just carried on :-)

Not enough information. Where exactly on the car and under what circumstances do you hear the noise?

I have a 01 Civic I bought brand new it has 130000 miles. should I have the shocks/struts changed?

No,unless car bottom out,hit hard when over holes and bumps,or sign of oil leaks around strut housing.
I have a 01 Civic I bought brand new it has 130000 miles. should I have the shocks/struts changed?
No need unless they are showing signs of wear - for example car not settling properly if you bounce the corners.

Ask your garage to check - won't take them 5 minutes.
I have a 01 Civic I bought brand new it has 130000 miles. should I have the shocks/struts changed?
No, not if the car isn't bottoming out on rolling roads or the tires show shock absorber cupping wear. Instead, make sure you've change the timing belt or engine damage can occur when it breaks. Change the water pump and idler pulley at the same time.
Motorist Assurance Program guidelines recommend replacing OE shocks and struts at 50,000 miles because independent testing has revealed by that mileage braking distances will increase and handling capability will be reduced measurably.

  • How do you change the struts on a 1997 Honda Civic HX?

I trust you are asking about the front struts and the question is actually a 2 part question. To remove the strut take the wheel off and start at the bottom. There are two bolts at the bottom of the strut; one is a thru bolt at the bottom of the strut fork that has a mating nut; the other is at the top of the strut fork that is a pinch bolt that screws into the upper fork. Remove those two bolts, then remove the upper strut bolt at the top of the strut in the engine compartment. You can then remove the strut assembly from underneath the car.

You will need a strut spring compressor to remove the strut cartridge. DO NOT try to take it apart without the spring compressor or you can get severly injured. Do not use a cheap spring compressor because the compressor might break. If in doubt, take the strut assembly to a shop that has the right equipment and pay them to disassemble, remove and replace the strut cartridge. Its cheaper to pay a shop to do the removal and replacement of the strut cartridge than it is for you to buy the spring compressor.

On most cars, you will have to do a four wheel alignment after you replace the strut cartridge because you will change the alignment geometry. You can't do that at home, so you'll have to take the car to a shop to have that done.

Honestly, its just a better deal to have a reputable shop change the strut and do the alignment than it is to mess with the removal and run back and forth to get the cartridge changed and then have to get a alignment after that. Its not worth what you would save in doing some of it yourself

    hope that answers your questions
How do you change the struts on a 1997 Honda Civic HX?
The guy before me is right.Be careful with that stock spring it is compressed in there very tight and will shoot off without a tool holding it together. You can do this yourself though with a compressor tool barrowed from some auto parts stores. For the rear struts you drop the control arm down by the inner control arm bolts to make room to remove the strut.Kids do this all the time to the Civics and Integras right in there driveway its not really a big deal just alot of work. Some of the bolts will be really rusty so you might need an impact wrench. Be careful not to snap off bolts with a cheater bar! Ive done that and it sucks!Research it on google or yahoo.Hondas have tons of forum websites with great how-tos and pics.

How do I compress a coil spring without a spring compressor?
There really is no safe alternative to compressing a coil spring with

that much tension. A trip to the emergency room will reveal that the

back yard shade tree method did not work. Rent the Tool is a cheap

    alternative to medical bills.
How do I compress a coil spring without a spring compressor?
Yeah,I do know a way,but I won't tell you,and if anyone else here has any common sense, they will tell you the same thing. It's not worth the risk.If you don't want to buy the proper tool to do the job,pay someone to do it.At least you'll be alive to ***** about it.
There are several ways to do that, but most are very unsafe.

Many Auto Parts stores will rent you a spring compressor for very little or no cost. That is what I would do in your shoes.

    Good luck
If you don't want to die I would recommend finding a spring compressor to borrow or rent one!
Put them on a vise and then use big C-clamps to secure them in place and move them. I dunno...just a guess. You may wanna check and see if that would damage the springs to any degree. Good Luck
They rent or loan spring compressors at some rental places or shops

Changed struts and cv joints..now brakes dont work?

I have a 1992 toyota corolla, I was replacing most of the left front end, I did the cv joints, the struts, and the ball joint. When I was done putting everything back together i went to make sure the brakes worked, since it was one of the last things to go back on...well they dont. I tried bleeding them, but there isnt even any pressure in the line. I filled the brake fluid and everything, but the pedal still pushes easily to the floor, and even with it to the floor someone can turn the tire with their hands no problem
Changed struts and cv joints..now brakes dont work?
Did you twist the line putting it back on? You may just have the line pinched off. Take a look and you'll know right away. You should just have to untwist it.

often when you take one thing apart something else goes .always go back to basics if you have no brake pressure the master cylinder is junk or needs to be blead stop chasing ghosts and go to the begining you can bleed the master on the car with two pieces of short line run them directly into the cylinder and pump the brakes if it dont work its junk personally i would just go buy a new M-C there not usualy that expensive ps-bleed it before you install it good luck chicky KEITH FROM OSSIPEE NH

The sound gets louder on rough roads. I have had my struts changed, front end aligment, and wheels balanced. Does anyone have any suggestions on what the issue maybe? I am not sure if it is a ball joint or a wheel bearing.

bad cv joint..does sound and feel change at high speed and on courners?? if not it may b ball joint
I have a 2003 Nissan Maxima, and there is a clicking noise when i drive the car.?
    Ball joints.

    Or tie rods.

Not CV joints. They'd make different lower tone noise. More of a clunky-clunky-clunky, not a clicky-clicky-clicky.

Does it make noise sitting still and turning the steering wheel? If so, I'm right.
I might need a little more information. Miles? And how the car is driven. Might be a little more descriptive about where and how the noise happens. Struts make a two way noise knock clunk. and click noise is almost always associated with Constant Velocity joints when turning and accelerating. Try this release the hood and see if the sound is different there is a safety catch don't drive over 40 miles an hour. Where do you notice the noise in the dash in the front end or behind you? all will help me with your clicking sound.
I agree the Cv joints may be worn.

I would check it out right away they can brake.

At best might just need grease.

  • On fixed main landing gear how does an airplane get WOW signal. Where did they put the WOW sensor?

I have seen on other oleo-strut airplanes that they have put on the strut. When the ground loads on landing gear occur strut displacement changes and by a proximity sensor they get wow signal. I couldn't understand ; how do they get wow signal from a leaf spring type main landing gear. Thanks,
On fixed main landing gear how does an airplane get WOW signal. Where did they put the WOW sensor?
The Cessna 172RG for example has a WOW sensor located on the nose gear, since it is the oleo type which lends itself to WOW switches much more easily. This isn't as good of a solution as putting the switch on one or both of the main gears, however, as the nose gear can fully extend during taxi or takeoff roll before rotation, and if the gear handle happened to be up, so goes the gear. But, it is better than nothing at all.

On fixed main landing gear how does an airplane get WOW signal. Where did they put the WOW sensor?
The wow sensor is something only large airplanes have. Not that small planes couldn't have the sensor, but generally speaking their systems are not that complicated.

The wow sensor is just one of several sensors the computer will look at to determine what mode the airplane should be in. For example, on a Challenger (and crj) there are three modes, ground, taxi, and air.

If, for example the wow sensor shows weight on 3 wheels, the engines are off and the cabin door is open, the computer can determine that the airplane is parked and will operate in ground mode.

Its fair to say that you aren't going to find any fixed gear airplanes with that kind of sophisticated computer systems. I would say the cessna (columbia) 400 is one of, if not the most advanced fixed gear airplane out there and its leaps and bounds away from being sophisticated enough to need any kind of computer system that can determine if its on the ground or not.
I'm laughing at Grumpy Geezer's answer! He is correct, as is Warbird.

Although there are several systems that may need to know whether there is weight on wheels depending on the aircraft's complexity, the PRIMARY reason for a WOW switch, is to keep the landing gear from retracting on the ground.

And just so you know, every airplane with retractable gear has a WOW switch of some sort, regardless of it's size or complexity.

    RTFQ..........I love that!
Looks like Warbird actially read the question. If you have a fixed gear airplane there is no need for the WOW switch, thus they are not installed.
Anything with spring leaf gear doesn't need a WOW switch.

Can a Strut cause a tire to shred?

I have a 2005 Chevy Impala. Last week my partner was driving it when she said that she heard a loud banging sound and the engine revved up and she could not go over 15mph. When I got to where she was there was no sound coming from the engine and I later found that the inside of my driver鈥檚 side front tire was shredded and it looked as if it had been caused by the strut. I changed the tire to my spare and the car made it home just fine and went over 40mph鈥ould the strut have caused the tire to shred? It does not appear to be bad, but I have not been able to put a regular tire back on it due to lack of funds鈥ELP!!! I鈥檓 tired of bumming rides!
Can a Strut cause a tire to shred?
No. The only way that can happen is if the tire rubs on the strut and that can only happen if the tire or knuckle is very loose but that can't happen 'cause that would mean the whole alignment would be way out of wack and the car would shake terribly. Something like that usually happens when a tire is worn out enough that it heats up the wire mesh within the tire causing it to break, which in turn causes it to form an air bubble at the break, which causes it to shred off the tread and pop. Can't forget also that it will happen if you buy a cheap or used tire.
Can a Strut cause a tire to shred?
had a blow out and kept on going and tire shredded
A broken strut could cause alignment problems, and over time cause uneven tire wear and a blowout.
She just blew a tire and kept driving on it, the strut tower cant shred the tire unless the whole assembly holding the wheel on falls apart.

If you cannot afford a regular tire, and are riding around with a donut (temporary tire) on your front wheels, do yourself a favor and take the donut off and swap it with one of your rear wheels.

Extended driving while using a donut is really bad for your differential, which you have on your front (drive) wheels. It is not good to drive around with it on your back wheels either, but it is a lot worse on the front

    1984 Chevrolet Celebrity Changing Shocks?

Is there a step by step procedure somewhere on how to change the shocks and struts on a 1984 Celebrity. Also what pratfalls one may encounter. Thanks.
    1984 Chevrolet Celebrity Changing Shocks?
I have a complete manual for that car. I don't imagine you live in CT. I don't have the car anymore. It will be hard to change the struts without air tools and you need a spring compressor. The shocks are not as bad but you still have to cotend with 23 year old nuts and bolts. It will be a serious pain in the butt is all I can tell you. I'll go though the process if you are serious about doing it, but you tell me.
    1984 Chevrolet Celebrity Changing Shocks?
The back shocks are easy, nothing special required. The front struts are a different story, and require special tools and spring compressors to do it safety. Leave the fronts to a pro.
Shocks can be a little scary. but don't be afraid. The most important thing to remember about shock is they bit. If it is a McStren strut. the you will need a tool to compress the coil spring. however if it is what i think then no big deal. Most cars have a access hole in the wheel well under the hood. there are three screws you need to gentle take out. %26amp; one bolt under the lower control arm. then the shock should be able to come out from the access hole. To take the coil spring out you must !!!carefully!!! jack up the car on jack stands. Then jack up on the Lower Control Arm. compressing the coil spring as much as possible. Take the steering knuckle off. after loosening the inner bolts of the LCA After you done this, and the knuckle is off VERY GENTLY decompress the coil spring. And replace.

Now to replace the coil spring you must use cation. If it isn't done correctly then it could say hi the hard way. try to keep is strait, okay. I hope this helps you. i know it can be a challenge. !!!Oh. when tighting the castle nuts back don't loosen the nut to make the pin go in. Always tighten it. SAFETY FIRST

But before you try this get another opinion on it. It has been a long time since i done a job like this. I hope this helps you. Have Fun!
I'll list some tools you'll need before you start.

If you have an Auto Zone near by you can show a credit card and use the necessary tools while you do the job at no charge.

#1.You'll need a 30mm deep well socket to remove the large nut at the end of both drive axles.

#2. Five ton three finger puller to push the CV shafts out of the wheel bearings.

#3 . Pinion removal yoke to press out the lower ball joint.

    #4. Strut spring compressers (2)

Remove both 30mm nuts with a1/2 wratchet and a piece of pipe for leverage. Loosen both front wheels, raise the car and support it on jackstands behind the front wheels on the sub frame. Remove both front brake calipers and support with wire or rope. Remove the rotors. Remove the nut at the bottom of the lower ball joint. Pop it out with the pitman removal tool. Press the axles out of the wheel bearings with the 5 ton puller. Remove the pinch bolts on the struts. The struts slide out of the spindles with the help of a large hammer on the top of the spindle. Remove the three nuts on top of the struts and they drop out.

The only difficult part of the job is removing the pinch bolts. They are often heavily rusted and corroded making them a pain to drive completely out. If you decide to re-use your coil springs you'll need to compress the old springs and transfer them to the new struts. Be sure the strut bearings are OK at the top of both struts.

The rear shocks are straight forward.

Can somebody help? Or give me some advise on struts?

I changed the strut on the driver's side of the front tires on my 2000 Chrysler Grand Voyager and now I am hearing noise when it hits bumps.. I put a new insulator on the bottom end of the spring but still getting this noise. It sounded like the spring hitting against the metal plate of the shock. But not really sure.. Can somebody tell me why it does that? Or perhaps some advice to correct the problem?

You could have an upper insulator bad, or installed wrong. If you have everything installed right, check your inner sway bar bushings. Stand on the driver's side of the car and put your hands on the top of the door. Rock the car side to side easy while someone checks the bushings. I've seen three Chrysler vans with bad inner bushings lately.

sorry, i thought this question was about strutting - in which case my teacher could have helpd you!

as for your question: it sounds like your spring is hitting the top hat as the spring is not held captive, tighten the nut on the top and if the spring is still not captive, your strut is too long
sounds like you didn't tighten the nut all the way down. you should be able to see if its loose by bouncing the car by hand.

How is the ride quality on Skunk2 coilover sleeves?

Preferably on a 5th gen Prelude SH with stock struts. But other experiences will do also. I just want to know the ride quality. I know I should change the struts also but I don't have the money for that as of now. I will probably change it by next year. Also if you wanted to know, I had many experiences in changing struts and springs and lowering cars, I've lowered many of my friends' cars. Also, I am not maxing out, I'm just going to do a 2 inch drop.

You have a honda, the ride will always be terrible until you buy a real car.

But besides that it really isn't worth the money to change the springs unless they are damaged, it's like changing spark plugs and thinking you feel a difference. If you feel anything it is all in your head. but as for the money angle of it, you could find a different brand spring with the same spring rate for much cheaper.
