I have a 2005 Chevy Impala. Last week my partner was driving it when she said that she heard a loud banging sound and the engine revved up and she could not go over 15mph. When I got to where she was there was no sound coming from the engine and I later found that the inside of my driver鈥檚 side front tire was shredded and it looked as if it had been caused by the strut. I changed the tire to my spare and the car made it home just fine and went over 40mph鈥ould the strut have caused the tire to shred? It does not appear to be bad, but I have not been able to put a regular tire back on it due to lack of funds鈥ELP!!! I鈥檓 tired of bumming rides!
Can a Strut cause a tire to shred?
No. The only way that can happen is if the tire rubs on the strut and that can only happen if the tire or knuckle is very loose but that can't happen 'cause that would mean the whole alignment would be way out of wack and the car would shake terribly. Something like that usually happens when a tire is worn out enough that it heats up the wire mesh within the tire causing it to break, which in turn causes it to form an air bubble at the break, which causes it to shred off the tread and pop. Can't forget also that it will happen if you buy a cheap or used tire.

A broken strut could cause alignment problems, and over time cause uneven tire wear and a blowout.
She just blew a tire and kept driving on it, the strut tower cant shred the tire unless the whole assembly holding the wheel on falls apart.
If you cannot afford a regular tire, and are riding around with a donut (temporary tire) on your front wheels, do yourself a favor and take the donut off and swap it with one of your rear wheels.
Extended driving while using a donut is really bad for your differential, which you have on your front (drive) wheels. It is not good to drive around with it on your back wheels either, but it is a lot worse on the front
