1990 Volvo 740GL - mechanic says we should do..?

Hey everyone, I bought a used 1990 740 GL wagon recently with about 160K miles. We're really on a tight budget right now so we can't really put a whole lot of work into the car, but we do want to keep the car for as long as possible wthout it breaking down. We took it to a mechanic to get a timing belt change and also have him look over the car. He told us that we don't really have to change the timing belt right now, because this car has the type of engine that won't get killed if it goes out while we're driving. He said technically we could just wait until it broke, have the car towed, and change it out then. So I guess we will wait on the timing belt. But, he did recommend that we do all of the following:

Change struts - $900

(Oil

Air filter

Petrol filter

Spark plugs

Cap

Rotar) - $500

Are these really necessary to do right now and is the price reasonable?

This is a fluid change and a tune up. You should check with other garages in your area for these services. This will help confirm the prices are not too high. Keeping the car tuned is important to the life of the vehicle.
