My daughters dodge intrepid with over 100,000 miles developed a clunk.?

It does it at no particular time. Sometimes when she hits a bump . Sometimes just going down the road. Sometimes when she turns a corner. They took it to a garage and they said it was the struts. After changing the struts, it still made the clunking sound. Another mechanic said it was definitely the transmission. After putting in a rebuilt transmission it still clunks. Any suggestions?

these cars carry a sub frame the bushing on the frame needs to be changed. before you change anything take it to any shop and ask them to check the bushing for you . many dodge and chrysler vehicle makes these noise

Just had same problem - mechanic ordered a new transmission mount form the dealer and CLUNK is gone (about $125 for part/replacement). Try it!!!!

I have a 98 intrepid that had a very similar problem. It ended up being the wheel hub (it actually broke and the tire was laying in the fender well when I made a turn). It cost me $80 for the hub and I was back in business. Hope this helps.

Sounds like you got a clunker.
Struts was the first thing that came to my mind. Take it to a different garage and have them test the struts again.
I'd suggest that she be thankful that she got 100,000 miles out of it, and then go buy a Toyota or Honda.
It could possibly be engine knocking. I dont know too much about it but if you google it you should be able to learn more. Here is a link to engine knocking in wikipedia

You should've spent that money on a new dodge charger.
I don't know about the clunk, but if her Intrepid has a 2.7 V6 in it, it's time to sell the car. The motor is running on borrowed time. These things fail notoriously at 80,000 miles. Don't sink a bunch of money into it.
we've got the same clunk..... have changed out the steering rack and pinion, struts, tie rods, greased bearings, etc.... nothing fixes it.... it's better when it's hot out, really awful when it's cold.... it can be felt all the way thru the steering wheel?.... ours has done it four years now.... but it's really getting bad now, as the steering wants to wander around.....

one thing that help ours was when they tightened the motor mounts.... might check there, too....

and if you find a fix, please email me, too!!!... ???.....
Sounds like the universal joints. These are the joints where the drive shaft attaches to the axle. There are U-joints on either end. I can't believe the shop didn't check this first.
It sounds like there is a loose or worn out suspension bushing, before you spend any more money for guess work , let it be clear that if the diagnoses does not fix the problem you don't pay for nothing and get it in writing. You should return to both places and ask for a partial refund based on the fact the same problem is steel there. The suspension clunk could be the bushing where it is mounted to the frame of the vehicle. So be careful and GOD Bless
Engine mounts can go bad and do this, or the cv joints.
Take it to the Dodge dealer. Ask them to check and verify that your subframe bolts and mounts are in good condition. 90% of the ones I see are separated due to rusted off washers. Easy, fairly inexpensive fix.
it can also be the strut mount bearings on the top of the struts, they go bad very often on dodges and Plymouth products, have them to check these, they may also want to check out any mounts on the engine or transmission, there's a lot of things on that car that can clunk, you may want to stop spending money on things people say it is,and have a shop take it and find the problem once and for all,it would sure be a lot cheaper than what your doing now, good luck on it.
take this question to dodgeintrepid.net/forums and ask those guys. since they drive the cars they will more than likely give you the proper advice
i have a 99 and i have a one thing after another happen yes there nice cars but they very hard to find someone fix them and when they do they don't do i right my ac as a link and they are charging me 1,000 just to fix it cause they say the parts are a lot of money but any ways i could be the ideal my does it to but they say its cause the motor's are big for a car and the ideal just to fast
Struts would have been my first guess, but since you say they were replaced I would check the engine and transmission mounts for clunkiness. Good luck!
It maybe bushings in the control arms when they wear it'll have play at where the control arms are mounted and when you hit bumps, accelerate, and making turns, it'll make clunking noises. The shop never checked all the bushings?
