Strut - Is it easy to change? Are there different types of struts available?

I need to change front wheel strut in camry. Should i change both at the same time? Problem is only on right side. I see different types of struts Trac, Gas, gs-2 gas etc. Which is good? Changing strut is a DIY job?|||By strut I take it you mean Macfearson strut, internal damper. If so,then no,its not diy, usually.Getting the strut off isn%26#039;t so hard, compressing the spring to allow damper removal can be deadly.lot of potential force built up in spring pressure.spring compressors are availiable, but I wouldn%26#039;t use less than 3 and some times that%26#039;s not enough, sliped off once, dam spring must%26#039;ve went thirty or more feet up in the air, good job it missed my face,or anything else!.You want cheap, take the strut off and take it to a garage for change,shouldn%26#039;t cost more than an hours labour.I prefer to do both sides at the one time.Imagine wearing one new shoe, and one of your old ones on the other foot,do you think u could walk okay?let alone run?|||In a nutshell...No. Changing struts is not a DIY job. If it has struts that come out in one assembly(spring and shock) together then the spring is under extreme load and will expand rapidly once the top bolt is removed and hurt you. You might be able to take the strut assembly out as one piece and take it to your local shop to disassemble/reassemble and save a few bucks but you will just have to put them back on the car to take it in anyway for an alignment. I have done them in the past with spring compressors but it is NOT at all safe and I would greatly recommend leaving that particular job to the pros.
